Show Bio

Born in Chicago in 1971, Lemuel Muhammad is the 4th child of 12 brothers and sisters. Raised in a fatherless home, he had many disadvantages and difficulties. It was these very circumstances that would become the cornerstone in his process of building character and integrity. As a child, Mr. Muhammad dreamed of becoming a Martial Artist, and making movies. These dreams were fed by watching the man who impressed Mr. Muhammad the most with his exemplary Martial Arts skills and a knack for playing the hero role in all of his films. Mr. Bruce Lee. Mr. Lee helped shape Mr. Muhammad's initial steps toward the Martial Arts.As a youth, Mr. Muhammad suffered his family's nomadic travels from neighborhood to neighborhood across Chicago, including some instances of seeking housing in shelters for homeless and battered women. These experiences were extremely unsettling, but played a major role in developing self-reliance without resentment. It is this reliance on self above all else that has caused Mr. Muhammad to start two successful businesses: Fusion FX Graphics and Media Solutions, and the VSK Jiujitsu Institute of Self Defense. At the age of 14, Mr. Muhammad received his first formal instruction in Karate under Sensei Gregory Myrick. By God's grace, he was able to work in the Dojo to pay for his lessons. Mr. Muhammad earned a green belt from Sensei Myrick and quickly became one of Sensei Myrick's most prominent students. Mr. Muhammad credits Sensei Myrick with giving him the solid foundation that shaped his commitment to Martial Arts, a commitment that continues even stronger today.Mr. Muhammad returned to the path of Islam at the age of 20. There has been no single decision more life-changing than his decision to join the Nation of Islam. This would challenge him to be the best man that he could be. On this path, he learned military drill, general orders and the principle of Do for Self. In the Nation's F.O.I., Mr. Muhammad learned the lessons of steadfastness, hard work, duty, loyalty and life trials that are necessary to establish truth. Mr. Muhammad credits his intense desire and passion for success in business and as a human being to lessons taught by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. The Minister's up-to-date representation of the Teachings of The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad appealed greatly to the modernistic framework of Mr. Muhammad’s thinking.A notable member of the F.O.I., Mr. Muhammad has experienced many levels of involvement in the Nation of Islam. He served as personal security for the First Lady of the Nation of Islam, Mother Khadijah Farrakhan; he has traveled with the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan in the extended forces of his security detail; and he headed the special security (extraction) team at several N.O.I. events and functions. In addition to his role as a soldier, he served as a production assistant for The Final Call newspaper. His outstanding skill in graphic design and page layout afforded him the opportunity to spearhead a newly-formed department within Final Call, Inc.: FCI Product and Development. His passion for Do For Self fueled his desire to start side businesses, giving him the confidence and certainty that he would one day be a successful entrepreneur.Even as Mr. Muhammad excelled as a graphic artist and security professional, his love of the Martial Arts beckoned him toward more extensive training. In a "chance" meeting, he met his second teacher, Shihan Larry Tankson. Shihan Larry Tankson was instrumental in his growth as a Martial Artist, and the lessons learned have carried over into how he teaches sparring in his own Dojo. As fate would have it, Mr. Muhammad met the most exceptional Martial Arts master of the last forty years on the telephone. This fateful conversation with the Supreme Grandmaster, Dr. Moses Powell changed the course of Mr. Muhammad's Martial Arts life. "I remember the electricity that I felt over the phone. I was truly acting like a groupie. I asked all of the silliest and most insignificant questions. Still, I was talking to, at that time, a living legend. I shall be eternally grateful for the experience." On that day, the quest began to become Dr. Powell's student. The journey ended in 1994 upon yet another "chance meeting." He met Professor Anthony Muhammad, and welcomed the opportunity to be Professor Muhammad’s student. An instant connection was made, and they have been joined at the heart since the first day. The last fourteen years have yielded so much benefit and growth. Professor Anthony Muhammad became heir to the Sanuces Ryu family. Mr. Muhammad became the first black belt student from Chicago of (now Grandmaster) Anthony Muhammad. A highly notable pupil of Grandmaster, Mr. Muhammad went to the head of the class in under four and one-half years. He has traveled extensively with his teacher in and out of the country. He has competed internationally and is recognized as a young master. He has received many championship awards and is now producing champions in his own Dojo. He currently holds the Professional Karate Commission's International Grand Championship for Self- Defense. His exceptional self-defense skill has garnered him prestige in many circles in and out of the Martial Arts world. His Dojo offers one of the most popular Martial Arts curricula from the Midwest to the Eastern seaboard. He has been studying Martial Arts for over twenty years and is seen as a leader in personal protection and self-defense tactics.Mr. Muhammad published VSK Jiujitsu Basics in 2005. A springboard to his further success, he established the VSK Jiujitsu Institute of Self Defense in the summer of 2006. In February 2007 he began hosting the Remember the Well from which You Sprung Seminars, featuring his master, Grandmaster Anthony Muhammad. Later in 2007, he became the Professional Karate Commission's International Grand Champion in Self-Defense for the first time. In November of 2007, he started the Women Only Self-Defense Seminars, designed to empower women against the rampant and horrendous crimes being waged on females. Inspired by the local tragedies of Lisa Stebic, Stacy Peterson and Nailah Franklin, Mr. Muhammad committed himself to being a conduit to saving lives. These seminars help women develop the mindset and the physical and technical skills necessary to ably and confidently protect themselves when the unthinkable occurs.Through tireless efforts and genuine dedication, Mr. Muhammad has become an asset to his community and a role model to his students of all ages. Although Mr. Muhammad has no biological children, he is a father to the young boys and girls within his program. He is beloved by his students and their parents, appreciated for his compassion, authenticity and skill. His persona and smile are accompanied by an incredible charm that draws you in. Still, you won’t find him talking about himself and his accomplishments. He is the embodiment of the message of humility he brings. He speaks of the greatness of his teacher and the founders of the VSK system of Jiujitsu. He constantly reminds himself and his students of the well from he sprung. He believes that the elevation of his master ultimately elevates himself. Some may struggle to believe that such a polished individual came from a poverty- stricken, single- parent home. He hopes instead that his evolution is an inspiration for others to strive harder and never give up. Lemuel Muhammad is an example of the outstanding resilience of the human spirit to achieve mastery regardless of challenges or barriers. He doesn’t believe in making excuses for his many failures. He understands falling and landing, so after a hard fall, he gets up and dusts himself off knowing without question that he will never quit, and nothing can stop him. These are the passionate life lessons and examples taught daily in the VSK Jiujitsu Institute of Self Defense, by its chief instructor, Lemuel Muhammad, Shihan.
